White Coat Ceremony

At the beginning of medical school, they have a special ceremony where they give entering medical students their white coat and welcome them to the occupation. Yesterday morning we went to the Roy E. Disney hall for Sean’s ceremony. The speakers were fantastic! At UNM they use the word Khatali a lot in the school of medicine. I learned yesterday that it means healer in Navajo and they like their students to remember with that title to treat the sick person in bed rather than the case or lab charts. I have loved learning about the school’s focus on people and circumstances these past two weeks as Sean has completed his public health training. I am so proud of him!

Mom and Dad P came down for the ceremony and we spent a fun day going to lunch, watching a movie, and visiting. We also went to the campus bookstore where Sean got all his fancy doctor toys=) They really are quite nice instruments, he got a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, scalpel, and that tool the doctor uses to look in your nose, ear, and throat. The stethoscope is the coolest, we felt like we were shopping for broomsticks in Diagon Alley with names like the Cardiology 3 and the Classic 2. We went with the Cardiology 3 which we decided was the equivalent of the Nimbus 2000.
Here’s Sean being “coated” =)

He’s pretty excited, can’t you tell? (Actually he told me he’s glad he gets to put an apron over these weird scrubs, I think the scrubs are adorable, not to mention they were free!)
